Radiating Confidence
Block 18 is big, bold, and bursting with energy. Made from half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, and split-square units, this block is a swirling starburst that radiates from the center and anchors its section with dramatic movement.
The soft ballet pink, crisp white, and rich green from the Joyful colorway create a perfectly balanced storm of motion and symmetry—while the surrounding blocks in this photo hint at how it will soon be nestled into the full quilt layout.
In my humble opinion it is the toughest block in the entire quilt but once you have made this block you certainly will have half rectangles mastered and the remaining blocks will b easy in comparison.
Some highlights about this block.
Pinwheel Core: The heart of the block is a pinwheel that’s clean and symmetrical—giving the entire block direction and spin.
Expanding Motion: Every half rectangle section builds outward in a rotational flow. It’s one of those blocks that truly moves when you look at it.
High-Contrast Framing: The dark green gives this block a grounded finish and lets the soft inner tones glow from the inside out.
Tips for Success:
Cut extra pieces so you can have some practice pieces
Trim your units before assembling to maintain crisp corners and spinning movement.
Pay attention to the directional instructions.
Work in quadrants—this block is easier to construct in mirrored sections.
Press toward the darker fabric for cleaner seams and stronger visual impact.
While the pattern is writen for all the blocks to be made without extra rulers and tools. This is where a specialized ruler is well woth the cost. You will use it more thoughout the quilt.
oh, and I forgot to say, take deep breathes and relax.
Block 5 isn’t just another square—it’s a statement. Confident, dynamic, and full of joy—just like your quilt is becoming.
We will be moving on to smaller, simpler blocks next month.
